| "The
Interview with Joy King"
THE
ROCK: Who is Joy King, tell us something about you?
Joy King: Well, my name is Joy King
THE
ROCK: Where are you from, and currently residing?
Joy King: I was born in Toledo, Ohio and
raised in California, Maryland, and North Carolina. Currently I reside
in New Jersey.
THE
ROCK: Are there any other writers in the family?
Joy King: No, I'm the first!!
THE
ROCK: When did you start writing?
Joy King: Ever since I was a little girl
I enjoyed writing poetry but it wasn't until much later in life did
I discover my love for writing.
THE
ROCK: What prepared you to become an author?
Joy King: Honestly, I would say my own
life experiences and the many
different people I've met along the way.
THE
ROCK: What inspired you to become a writer?
Joy King: I think sometimes in life, the
path you are meant to follow chooses you. Because of my own trials and
tribulations I felt an obligation to tell this story.
THE
ROCK: What inspired you to write your book?
Joy King: After reading several novels
that were entertaining, they didn’t provide a solution for everyday
females caught up in unusual circumstances. I wanted to tell a story
about females that may be able to relate to my type of struggles.
THE
ROCK: Tell us about your newest creation. What is the
premise?
Joy King: Dirty Little Secrets is centered
on the character Tyler Blake. As a young child she watches her mother
leave her father for a rich man who she later finds out is abusive.
This triggers a recipe for disaster with Tyler because she grows up
insecure, yearning to be loved unconditionally by a man but ends up
being attracted to men like her step father, who are rich, powerful
and abusive. Tyler also has dreams of being a star which leads her to
New York City. But in her pursuit of stardom she’s constantly
sidetracked because her desperate need to be loved supercedes any sort
of rational judgment on her part. Tyler is a flawed, complex character,
whose behavior and actions aren’t sugar coated. The raw truth
is exposed and whether you agree with it or not hopefully the reader
will walk away with the importance of self love and of course be entertained
in the process!!
THE
ROCK: Any publishing contracts in the working?
Joy King: Besides having my deal with St.
Martin's I also right Street
Lit under the name Deja King.
THE
ROCK: Have you ever self-published? Why or why not?
Joy King: Yes. I got my first book deal
because of a book I self-published. I didn't print up many copies but
I gave them to vendors in New York City. An editor from St. Martin's
Press actually read my book, loved it and reached out to me. The rest
is history!!
THE
ROCK: What are "traditional publishers" looking
for?
Joy King: I think that most are looking
for a fresh new voice that is different than what's already out there.
THE
ROCK: If you were a publisher, what would be your niche?
Why?
Joy King: I actually started my own publishing
company with another author recently. Its called Young Diamond Books.
It urban lit for teenagers. What makes it so unique is that it's entertaining
but the work contains no profanity or explicit sex scenes. The first
book Ride Wit' Me by Katina King is due out in July 2006.
THE
ROCK: For an author, is having a publishing contract with
a "traditional publisher" important professionally? Why?
Joy King: Very much so. It seems that's
the only way people take you seriously as a writer. It's like you need
that stamp of approval from a major publisher in order to be taken seriously
as an author in this business.
THE
ROCK: What are some of your professional and personal
achievements?
Joy King: I got an internship position
and immediately began to work my way up the ranks at The Terrie Williams
Agency. I ended up working on projects for Johnnie Cochran, The Essence
Awards, The Essence Music Festival, The NBA Player’s Association,
Moet & Chandon, and several other entertainment executives and celebrities.
In
1999, I attended the Lee Strasburg Theater Institute before accepting
the job as Director of Hip Hop Artist Relations at Click Radio, where
I developed segments featuring some of the biggest names in Hip Hop.
I
would have to say being a mother. I didn't truly start loving myself
until I became a good mother.
THE
ROCK: Who are some of your favorite authors?
Joy King: Jackie Collins and James Patterson
THE
ROCK: Where do you want to be in 5 years?
Joy King: I want to be a #1 bestselling
author and have my own talk
show.
THE
ROCK: Where can readers find you?
Joy King: Please visit my website. www.joykingonline.com
Thanks for reaching out to me. I really enjoyed this interview!
THE
ROCK: Thank you very much, Ms. King.
