INTERVIEW

THE ROCK: Who is Toi Troutman; tell us something about
you?
Troutman: I am a single mother who works about 70
hours a week behind the scenes to make my clients
shine. I have been on all sides of the business both
in front and behind the scenes, I and find this
equally rewarding.

THE ROCK: Where are you from and currently residing?
Troutman: I am originally from Dayton, Ohio. I now
reside in the Los Angeles area and have for about 12
years now.

THE ROCK: Could you give us your job title and a short
description of your responsibilities?
Troutman: I am a celebrity publicist. Primarily, I get
publicity coverage for my clients in magazines,
newspapers, and television. I also accompany them and
get them invited to red carpet celebrity events.

THE ROCK: How long have you been doing this type of
work?
Troutman: I have been doing this type of work off and
on for the last 19 years. I started working in the
field for my famous family. I didn't even realize that
while I was still in my teens, I was a bonafide
publicist.

THE ROCK: Are you experiencing job fulfillment, and
what type of gratification do you get at the end of
the day?
Troutman: I am gratified when I see articles and
coverage on my clients and hear their colleagues and
friends excited and reading about them... and seeing
them in interviews on television.

THE ROCK: What college(s) did you attend, and what was
your major?
Troutman: I attended CSU in Wilberforce, Ohio; I went
on tour with a major artist and finished my degree
online. I then went back and took courses at UCLA in
Entertainment Publicity.

THE ROCK: What are some of your personal achievements?
Troutman: My greatest acheivement is raising my sons
alone. I have single-handedly raised my family, and I
enjoy a wonderful and fulfilling relationship with my
mother as her only child.

THE ROCK: What are some of your professional
achievements?
Troutman: I have had success as a vocalist, actress
and now working behind the scenes as a publicist.

THE ROCK: What books do you recommend for
self-enhancement?
Troutman: "Girl Get Your Money Straight" is a good
book for getting your finances in order which is very
important no matter what you choose to do as a career.

THE ROCK: Who are some of your personal heroes and/or
heroines?
Troutman: I admire the achievements of Oprah, like
everyone else does. I also appreciate the work that
some of the actors are doing with underprivileged
children.

THE ROCK: What career goals did you set for yourself?
Troutman: I am not doing anything I planned to do.
Growing up in a musical family, I always assumed that
I would do music and nothing else. I wanted to just do
albums and tour.

THE ROCK: What were your parents like when it came to
education and choosing a career?
Troutman: My parents were very insistant on
educational excellence, and I didn't let them down.
However, they did allow me the freedom to do
whatever I wanted to do. My father, who was in the
music business, always urged me not to get into it.

THE ROCK: Any other family members with college
degrees, and what are they doing today?
Troutman: My cousins have gone to school and earned
degrees in education. I also have a half sister in
Psychology right now. I'm very proud of them. My
father was a business major; however, he is no longer
with us.

THE ROCK: Did you play sports growing up, and were you
a leader as a child?
Troutman: I was such a girlie girl. I didn't like or
play any sports. I was definitely a leader. I was a
bossy kid, who always had to be in charge.

THE ROCK: Do you consider yourself a leader?
Troutman: Yes. Definitely!

THE ROCK: Tell us about your career field and what is
so interesting about it to you?
Troutman: In the field of public relations,
particularly when you represent primarily African
American actors, there is a new challenge to
get your clients seen and respected on a daily basis.

THE ROCK: If you had to do something else for a
living, what would it be?
Troutman: I would go ahead and pursue my music and
acting.

THE ROCK: If you wrote a book, what would it be about?
Why?
Troutman: I am actually working on a fiction novel. I
don't want to reveal too many details, but let's just
say a lot of sisters have been where the heroine is
going.

THE ROCK: If you could be anybody else in the world,
who would it be? Why?
Troutman: I hate this question, because my answer is
so cliche. I would just be myself.

THE ROCK: If you were the President of the United
States, how would you handle some of the world crisis
that we are presently involved in?
Troutman: Man, I would quit!

THE ROCK: What advice would you give students entering
college?
Troutman: Party later. Study now. Believe me. The
parties are going nowhere, but the years of
opportunity to learn and bond with your peers in other
ways will soon be gone.

THE ROCK: If you were a keynote speaker for a high
school graduating class, what would be your subject
matter?
Troutman: Make Your Own Tomorrow. I would stress that
each and every graduate in the room has the
opportunity to be successful in his or her chosen
field.

THE ROCK: Thanks a lot Ms. Troutman. Best wishes in
all of your future endeavors.
Troutman: Thank you for requesting an interview with
me. I enjoyed it!
