September 9, 2007
Location: Rams Head Tavern, 33 West Street,

Regina Carter’s immersion in music began
at the age of two when she took up piano, followed

to the Suzuki method of music teaching, the
approach freed her from the rigid restraints
of solely reading music and opened her to the
wonders of improvisation. Though her original
focus was classical music, with the hope of
being a soloist with a major symphony, the pull
of Detroit’s rich soul music legacy and
the discovery of jazz broadened her horizons.

AUTUMN SMOOTH JAZZ starring PAUL TAYLOR * LEELA
JAMES * BOB BALDWIN
Saturday, September 15, 8:00pm
Location: Lyric Opera House, 140 West
Mt. Royal Avenue, Baltimore, MD
The unstoppable phenomenon of saxophonist Paul
Taylor reached a fever pitch with Steppin’
Out,” the irrepressible title track from
his Top Ten Billboard Contemporary Jazz album.
It became Radio & Records’ third biggest
genre airplay cut of the year. Taylor’s
energetic, free-spirited playing style on “Nightlife”
perfectly reflects the “clean slate vibe”
he has in approaching the writing and recording
process.
One listen to Leela James' nostalgic debut,
"A Change is Gonna Come," and it's
evident that she is a pupil and a conduit of
Classic Soul! The Los Angeles songbird's emotive
vocals and ardent lyrics belie her youth and
her diminutive appearance. Judging by her fervor
and indelible talent, the industry has been
blessed with another dignitary who not only
evokes soul but understands and abides by it!
Keyboardist/ Producer/Arranger Bob Baldwin's
learned piano from his father, Robert Baldwin,
Sr., (also an accomplished jazz pianist), at
age four. In addition, he had private lessons
in Classical and Jazz Standards. Bob's musical
influences range from Oscar Peterson, Herbie
Hancock and Miles Davis to Stevie Wonder, Aretha
Franklin and Marvin Gaye. His group, the Baldwin/Orlo
Project, performed at the legendary Bottom Line
in New York City leading to his first his first
album and eventually to his two-album deal with
Atlantic Jazz Records.

STEVIE WONDER
Sunday, September 16, 7:30pm
Location: Pier Six Concert Pavilion, 731
Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, MD
Stevie Wonder is a much-beloved American icon
and an indisputable genius not only of R&B
but popular music in general. Much like his
inspiration, Ray Charles, Wonder had a voracious
appetite for many different kinds of music,
and refused to confine himself to any one sound
or style. His best records were a richly eclectic
brew of soul, funk, rock & roll, sophisticated
Broadway style pop, jazz, reggae, and African
elements -- and they weren't just stylistic
exercises.
